TTI researchers are working to discover new and innovative techniques to relieve traffic congestion in metropolitan areas.
For more than 50 years, the Texas Transportation Institute has been leading research efforts to address major issues facing transportation in Texas and the nation. The Texas Transportation Institute’s cooperative relationship with the Texas Department of Transportation, combined with its status as a member of The Texas A&M University System, has led to the institute’s research, education and technology transfer focus. Boasting a statewide transportation research network that is second to none, the Texas Transportation Institute partners with universities and communities to improve transportation in Texas, which in turn has a direct effect on the economy, safety, mobility and other quality-of-life factors important to Texans.

- TTI's mission is to solve transportation problems through research, to transfer technology, and to develop diverse human resources to meet the transportation challenges of tomorrow.
- Headquartered at College Station, TTI maintains a full-service proving facility in Bryan and has offices in Arlington, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Galveston and El Paso. These offices located in urban settings place TTI researchers in real-world environments and greatly facilitate data collection and research implementation. In addition, TTI is part of an academic-industry collaboration that operates a 5,800-acre test site at Pecos.
- TTI researchers address all modes of transportation—highway, public transit, air, water, rail, bicycle and pedestrian, and pipeline—leading over 400 research projects each year.
- TTI's research budget each year is funded primarily through competitively awarded contracts, further increasing value to taxpayers while addressing critical transportation issues that save lives, time and money.
- The results of TTI research can be found in virtually every mile of Texas roadways, including the quality of the paved surface; roadside safety devices; improved lighting and signage; traffic control; advanced transportation management systems; and other areas that improve transportation.
- TTI's research facilities provide year-round access for crash testing; pavement friction and smoothness testing; erosion control; homeland security; and human factors testing and research.
