Program Description
The primary objective of the Texas A&M University System Pathways to the Doctorate program is to increase the quality, number, and diversity of Ph.D. graduates across all disciplines.
Through a variety of activities such as seminars and workshops, inter-institutional exchange programs, a mentoring program and an annual research symposium with System-wide participation, the Pathways program aims to:
- create a pathway for talented students to pursue graduate education;
- fosters opportunities for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students to collaborate and to foster innovative research and interpersonal communication skills;
- enlightens and encourages students and teachers (K-12 through college) to see that science and technology are essential to lead a life of discovery and fun;
- and help meet faculty needs as post-secondary enrollment grows and current faculty retire.
As participating students progress through Pathways to the Doctorate, there are various levels of participation that students can achieve:
- Pathways Undergraduate Scholars are undergraduates in the program that participate in a minimum of two Pathways activities including at least one Pathways Research Symposium.
- Pathways Scholars are graduate students that participate in the
program. In addition to those previously mentioned activities,
these students are invited to participate in the Pathways Primer,
Pathways Seminar and Workshop Series, and Pathways Exchange Program.
- Pathways Fellows are those designated graduate students in the
program that are recipients of the Pathways
Fellowship.
- Pathways Mentors are those designated system faculty members and senior graduate students that serve as mentors to new graduate and undergraduate students in the Pathways program.
