(Canyon)—The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team at West Texas A&M University will advance to SIFE USA national competition in May thanks to a regional championship it captured April 6 in Memphis, Tenn.
The victory marks the 12th consecutive year that WTAMU has won a SIFE regional title. In its league, WTAMU also won individual-topic competitions in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business ethics, success skills and team sustainability, collecting $500 for each and qualifying for individual-topic competitions at the national level, May 22 in Kansas City, Mo.
“It is exciting to see team members rewarded for all the hard work they have contributed over the year,” Jean Walker, instructor of finance and adviser for the WTAMU SIFE team, said. “Although we’ve been successful in years past, the number of special-topic competitions we won this year exceeded expectations.”
Walker, who accompanied the team to Tennessee, also serves as director of the West Texas Center for Economic Education. She holds a Sam Walton Fellowship in Free Enterprise as adviser to the team.
University-based SIFE teams in more than 40 countries develop outreach projects that create economic opportunity for others by teaching market economics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business ethics and success skills necessary to compete in the global marketplace.
